First access to the web interface
What is on the label
Section titled “What is on the label”Each unit is delivered with a label that shows the values you need:
| Label field | Use |
|---|---|
| IMEI and serial number | Identifies the unit to MiWire support |
| LAN IP | The address of the web interface on the LAN, for example 192.168.2.1 |
| SSID | The name of the unit’s Wi-Fi network |
| Wi-Fi password | The password of that Wi-Fi network |
| Password | The password of the admin login of the web interface |
Both passwords are generated individually for each unit at the factory; no two units share them, and the Wi-Fi password is different from the admin password. Keep the label where only you can read it, or change the passwords after the first login.
Logging in
Section titled “Logging in”- Connect a computer to the unit’s LAN port or to its Wi-Fi network.
- Open a browser and go to
https://<LAN IP>/, for examplehttps://192.168.2.1/. If you type the address withouthttps://, the unit redirects you to the HTTPS address: the web interface is only served over an encrypted connection. - Log in with the user name
adminand the password from the label.
The certificate warning
Section titled “The certificate warning”The first time you open the unit’s address, your browser shows a warning that the site’s certificate is not trusted (the wording varies: “Your connection is not private”, “Potential security risk ahead”, or similar).
This warning is expected. The unit’s web interface uses a certificate that the unit generated itself, because no public certificate authority issues certificates for private LAN addresses. The connection is still encrypted. Accept the warning once (“Advanced” and then “Proceed” or “Accept the risk”); your browser remembers the exception for that address.
The warning reappears in two cases: after a factory reset, because the unit generates a new certificate, and after about 13 months, when the certificate is renewed.
Changing the passwords
Section titled “Changing the passwords”Change the admin password under System > Administration (or the password entry on the status page) and the Wi-Fi password under Network > Wireless.
The admin password must follow these rules, which are also shown on the page:
- 8 to 64 characters,
- must not contain the user name,
- must not be one of the common passwords on the unit’s block list (for example
password,qwerty,admin,miwire,roudem,1234..., also with short number suffixes), - must not be a single repeated character or digits only.
There are no composition rules (no required mix of letters, digits and symbols): a long passphrase is a good choice.
If you lose the admin password, contact MiWire support. Support can help you regain access; a factory reset performed by the customer is not available yet (see Factory reset and decommissioning).
What the admin login can do
Section titled “What the admin login can do”The admin login manages the local side of the unit: Wi-Fi, LAN addressing, DHCP and DNS, firewall rules and port forwards, the time servers, and the switches on the Services page. It can also run the firmware update check. The settings that MiWire relies on to keep the unit secure and manageable (the web server’s own configuration, the update mechanism, the connections to MiWire) are not changeable from the admin login.
